Study Reveals Vaping Harms Fitness and Health, Comparable to Smoking
September 9, 2024A recent study conducted by Dr. Azmy Faisal at Manchester Metropolitan University involved 60 participants in their 20s, categorized into three groups: non-smokers, vapers, and smokers.
Participants underwent an incremental exercise test on a static bike to measure their physical ability and response to exercise.
Results revealed that vapers had a lower peak exercise capacity of 186 watts, compared to 226 watts for non-vapers, while smokers had a similar capacity of 182 watts.
Both vapers and smokers exhibited poorer blood vessel function and higher levels of muscle fatigue, indicated by increased lactate in their blood during exercise tests.
Research indicates that vaping may elevate cancer risks due to DNA changes and potentially harm vital organs due to toxic metals found in e-cigarette aerosols.
The study suggests that vaping may not be a healthier alternative to smoking and calls for increased awareness of its potential negative impact on fitness.
The government plans to address the marketing of vapes to minors through its tobacco and vapes bill, aiming to restrict access and promote cessation.
The performance of young vapers was found to be similar to that of young smokers, challenging the notion that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking.
Dr. Faisal presented the findings at the European Respiratory Society Congress, emphasizing that long-term vaping is harmful to health.
In the UK, vaping rates among adults have risen significantly, from 4.2% in 2014 to 11%, while usage among 11- to 17-year-olds surged from 1.3% to 7.6%.
Dr. Filippos Filippidis highlighted the need for awareness about the health risks of vaping, particularly among young people, due to the appeal of cheap vapes in enticing flavors.
Overall, the findings contradict the belief that vaping is a safer option, highlighting significant health risks associated with its long-term use.
