HIV Cases Linked to 'Vampire Facials' at Unlicensed Spa
April 29, 2024The CDC has identified the first known cases of HIV transmission linked to needle-based cosmetic procedures from a New Mexico spa.
Three women contracted HIV after receiving 'vampire facial' treatments at the unlicensed VIP Spa, which reused disposable equipment.
VIP Spa's owner, Maria de Lourdes Ramos de Ruiz, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years for illegal medical practices without a license.
Following the incident, nearly 200 former VIP Spa clients were tested for HIV, with no further infections detected.
Health officials continue to offer free HIV testing for past clients of the spa and emphasize the importance of using regulated facilities for cosmetic treatments.
The American Academy of Dermatology assures that 'vampire facials' are generally safe when performed with sterile techniques.
