Study Links Workplace Bullying to Sleep Troubles, Urges Couple-Focused Interventions

Professor Sanz-Vergel emphasizes the need for these couple-oriented programs to effectively manage the effects of workplace bullying on sleep and reduce levels of rumination.
A recent study conducted in Spain highlights the detrimental effects of workplace bullying on sleep, indicating that these impacts can worsen over time, particularly affecting sleep onset and early awakening.
The research comprised two studies: one involving 147 employees tracked over five days and another monitoring 139 couples over two months.
In addition to organizational strategies, individual-level interventions should focus on teaching stress management skills and the importance of disconnecting from work.
The authors also suggest implementing couple-oriented prevention programs that provide coping strategies to alleviate insomnia and its effects on relationships.
Findings reveal that insomnia symptoms can be 'contagious' between partners, meaning one person's sleep issues can adversely affect the other's sleep quality.
Lead author Professor Ana Sanz-Vergel points out that rumination often acts as a maladaptive coping strategy, leading to worse sleep outcomes.
Moreover, the study found that rumination significantly affects sleep quality, including overall satisfaction and its impact on life.
To combat these issues, the study advocates for organizational interventions aimed at reducing workplace bullying and fostering a healthier work culture.
