Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the President of Singapore, arrived in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on January 17, 2025, for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations with India.

During his visit, he will engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various ministers, and pay tribute at the Raj Ghat memorial for Mahatma Gandhi.

The visit is expected to result in several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that will enhance collaboration in sectors such as industrial parks, green hydrogen, petrochemicals, urban development, new energy, fintech, and skill development.

Both nations are likely to strategize on enhancing connectivity and economic ties, with an emphasis on green corridor projects.

The initiatives are part of a broader strategy to position Odisha as a hub for innovation, growth, and sustainability, which includes plans for an electronics city near Bhubaneswar.

Additionally, the establishment of a World Centre for Information Technology focusing on cybersecurity and data science will be addressed during the visit.

The partnership aims to support India's goal of 'Insurance for All' by 2047, enhancing access to insurance and contributing to financial security.

Tharman praised India's rapid transformation over the past decade, highlighting significant reductions in rural poverty and advancements in the digital sector.

The visit also aims to empower local communities, particularly women, by improving skills for better employment opportunities.

Security measures have been heightened in Bhubaneswar, with 40 police platoons deployed and traffic restrictions implemented to ensure smooth movement during the visit.

The agreements will also focus on enhancing the capacity and industry engagement of zonal industrial training institutes across Odisha.

Overall, the visit signifies a commitment to deepening ties between Singapore and India, with a focus on mutual growth and development.
