October 8, 2024The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, has escalated significantly, particularly in the Darfur region.
Since the conflict commenced, the United Nations estimates that over 20,000 people have been killed, with more than 10 million displaced, including 2.4 million who have fled to neighboring countries.
Recently, the Sudanese army conducted airstrikes targeting a market in Al Kuma, located approximately 70 kilometers east of El Fasher, resulting in at least 45 fatalities and numerous injuries.
The airstrikes also impacted the city of Mellit and areas in Hamrat al-Sheikh, which had not experienced conflict since the war began.
Tragically, fighting in North Darfur has led to the deaths of at least 13 children, with four others reported injured, according to UNICEF.
The deceased children were aged between 6 and 17 years old, highlighting the severe impact of the conflict on young lives.
Sheldon Yett, UNICEF's representative in Sudan, condemned the attacks on children, emphasizing that they should be safe in their homes and communities.
