Five U.S. Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 were killed in a CH-53E helicopter crash during a training flight in Pine Valley, Calif.

The helicopter was en route from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego when it went down.

Search and rescue operations were conducted to locate the downed aircraft and the Marines, despite adverse weather conditions.

Recovery efforts for the remains of the Marines and the helicopter's equipment are in progress.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched.

President Joe Biden has extended condolences to the families of the deceased Marines and acknowledged the search and recovery teams.
