A committee has been formed by Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism to review the controversial renovation of the Menkaure pyramid.

The formation of the committee followed public concern after a video surfaced showing granite blocks being placed on the pyramid's base, causing fears of extensive reconstruction.

Archaeologist Zahi Hawass is leading the committee, which comprises international experts from the Czech Republic, Germany, the USA, and Egypt.

The committee's role is to assess the restoration plans and align with UNESCO guidelines, ultimately deciding whether the project should continue.

Although the ministry stated that work would wait for the committee's decision, reporters from AFP noticed that renovation efforts were already in progress.

This incident has sparked a larger debate on the management and preservation of Egypt's historical heritage sites.
