UK's GreenScale Leads European VC Surge; US Dominates with Databricks' $10B Raise Amidst Global AI Investment Boom
January 22, 2025Europe saw a notable increase in venture capital (VC) investment, primarily driven by the UK, where GreenScale secured a remarkable USD 1.3 billion funding round for its AI-enabling data platform.
In contrast, the KPMG 'Q4 2024 Venture Pulse Report' revealed a significant downturn in VC investment in India, while the Americas continued to dominate funding during the same period.
Despite the decline, India did witness some top AI-related VC investments, such as Krutim's USD 50 million from Matrix Partners India and Nutrix AI’s USD 27.5 million seed round from Accel, though these amounts fall short compared to global figures.
Looking ahead, the report suggests that improved market conditions, particularly following the US presidential elections, could revitalize VC investments in sectors like defense tech, health, biotech, cybersecurity, and alternative energy.
In Asia, funding levels remained subdued, with CNNP Rich Energy from Beijing leading the region by raising USD 1.1 billion in Q4 2024.
The US played a pivotal role in the VC landscape, highlighted by Databricks' impressive USD 10 billion raise, which boosted its valuation to USD 62 billion, led by Thrive Capital and other major investors.
On a global scale, the AI sector attracted over USD 32 billion in VC funding, featuring significant investments such as USD 6.6 billion from OpenAI and USD 6 billion from xAI, among others.
Despite the slowdown in Q4 2024, Nitish Poddar from KPMG India remains optimistic for 2025, noting ongoing activity in the VC market, particularly in the quick commerce sector.
