Ex-Rheumatologist Indicted for Rape; Over 200 Patients Allege Assault During Medical Exams
January 17, 2025Dr. Derrick Todd, a Harvard-trained rheumatologist, has been indicted on multiple charges, including two counts of rape, stemming from allegations that he sexually assaulted over 200 patients during medical examinations.
More than 150 former patients have come forward, claiming Todd abused them under the guise of necessary medical procedures, including unnecessary pelvic floor therapy and breast exams.
Prosecutor Caroline Evans revealed that some examinations exceeded normal medical procedures, with one victim reportedly screaming in pain during an exam that continued nonetheless.
An arraignment for Todd is anticipated, with reports suggesting he may appear in Middlesex Superior Court on January 17, 2025.
Todd turned himself in to police on January 16, 2025, and was released on a $10,000 bail, with his attorney asserting his cooperation throughout the legal process.
In September 2023, Todd voluntarily surrendered his medical license amid multiple accusations of abuse, agreeing to stop practicing medicine without admitting any wrongdoing.
Brigham and Women's Hospital reported Todd to law enforcement after receiving anonymous complaints and has since supported the patients affected by his alleged actions.
Attorney Stacey Pietrowicz, representing one of the victims, indicated that there are many other victims yet to be identified.
The hospital expressed deep distress over the allegations against Todd, reaffirming its commitment to patient safety during the investigation.
The ongoing investigation has prompted authorities to encourage anyone with additional information related to Todd's conduct to contact Framingham police.
An attorney representing the victims stated that the indictments serve as a form of acknowledgment and vindication for the 228 patients who have come forward against Todd.
Todd has been ordered to surrender his passport, avoid contact with his alleged victims, and is prohibited from practicing medicine, a status he has adhered to by relinquishing his medical license.
