Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Yu Shang Foods Prompts Recall Across Four States
November 23, 2024The CDC indicated that the actual number of infected individuals is likely much higher, as many may not have been tested or reported.
A listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat meat and poultry products has led to 11 infections across California, Illinois, New York, and New Jersey, including one infant death in California.
The outbreak was traced back to contaminated meat detected during routine USDA testing on October 21, 2024, prompting a recall on November 9, which was later expanded on November 21.
Yu Shang Food has recalled products labeled with 'Yu Shang' and establishment numbers 'P46684' or 'EST. M46684,' produced prior to October 28, 2024.
Of the 11 infected individuals, whose samples were collected between October 2021 and July 2024, the median age was 64, and all identified as having Asian heritage.
Listeriosis, caused by Listeria monocytogenes, poses severe risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and newborns.
Consumers are advised to return or dispose of any recalled products and to clean surfaces that may have come into contact with them.
The CDC encourages anyone experiencing severe symptoms after consuming recalled products to seek medical attention.
The FSIS confirmed a connection between Yu Shang's ready-to-eat products and the illness clusters, raising concerns about potentially contaminated products still in consumers' homes.
Health officials suspect the outbreak may be underreported, as listeria testing can take 3 to 4 weeks for confirmation.
Among the infected, nine have been hospitalized, with laboratory findings confirming the link to Yu Shang Food products.
The prolonged nature of this outbreak raises concerns about ongoing issues with food preparation and storage practices at Yu Shang Food.
