Hurricane Helene Devastates Southeast; Eight Arrested for Looting Amidst Chaos
October 2, 2024Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across the southeastern United States, resulting in significant flooding, widespread damage, and at least 133 fatalities.
In the wake of the disaster, emergency workers are facing challenges in reaching isolated areas, with reports suggesting that around 600 individuals may still be unaccounted for.
In Washington County, Tennessee, Sheriff Keith Sexton reported the arrest of eight migrant workers for looting in a flood-ravaged area following the hurricane.
The looting incidents involved both occupied and unoccupied homes, some of which were barely standing after the storm.
Among the arrested, five suspects are facing aggravated burglary charges, while the remaining three are charged with burglary.
Although all suspects are in the U.S. legally on work visas, their legal status may be jeopardized due to the criminal charges.
The eight suspects are currently held on a $20,000 bond and were expected to appear in court on the day of their arrest.
To deter further looting, sheriff's office deputies are actively patrolling the flood zone.
