Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in downtown San Francisco on Saturday and is currently in serious but stable condition.

The incident occurred around 3:30 PM at the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue, shortly after Pearsall had been signing autographs.

According to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the suspect attempted to steal Pearsall's Rolex watch, but the athlete resisted, leading to a struggle.

Charges against the juvenile suspect are pending, with a decision expected early next week, likely to be filed in juvenile court.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed expressed her concern for Pearsall's recovery and emphasized that such violence will not be tolerated in the city.

Despite public concerns about crime, city officials reported a 32% decrease in property crime and a 14% decrease in violent crime in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year.

Medical experts have estimated that Pearsall could be sidelined for four to eight weeks due to his injuries, not accounting for potential psychological recovery.

In response to the shooting, the San Francisco Police Department plans to increase police presence in Union Square to reassure the public.

During the altercation, gunfire erupted, injuring both Pearsall and the 17-year-old suspect, who was also taken to the hospital.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott reported that the suspect was arrested immediately following the shooting and indicated that he acted alone.

Chief Scott also stated that there is no indication Pearsall was specifically targeted due to his status as a football player.
