Deputy Brandon Cunningham, a 30-year-old officer with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office, was killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic dispute in Hiram, Georgia.

Cunningham and another deputy arrived at the scene around 6:13 p.m. and were immediately met with gunfire from a suspect inside the home.

Major Ashley Henson reported that the suspect fired multiple shots at the officers, but only Deputy Cunningham was struck.

Cunningham was taken to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

This tragic incident marks the first line-of-duty death for the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Gary Gulledge expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing that the office had never lost an officer in the line of duty before this event.

Cunningham, who began his career with the sheriff's office in 2020, is survived by two children.

In addition to Cunningham, a woman associated with the incident was found with gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition at an Atlanta hospital.

The male suspect, who fired upon the deputies, was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the investigation into this tragic incident.
