Sacramento Mass Shooting Suspect Found Dead in Jail Cell Awaiting Trial
June 9, 202429-year-old Smiley Martin, a suspect in the 2022 Sacramento mass shooting, has died in his jail cell while awaiting trial.
The shooting left six people dead and 12 injured, with over 100 shots fired by at least five gunmen.
Martin faced murder and firearms charges and was found unresponsive during a cell check.
Efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
Martin and his brother, Dandrae Martin, were arrested in connection to the shooting.
Dandrae Martin had posted a video of himself with a handgun before the shooting.
Another man, Mtula Payton, was also charged in relation to the incident.
Smiley Martin had pleaded not guilty and was fighting to prove his innocence.
