SpaceX Triumphs in USSF-62 Launch: New Weather Satellite Aids Military
April 11, 2024
SpaceX conducted a successful launch of the USSF-62 mission for the U.S. Space Force from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday.
The mission delivered the Weather System Follow-on Microwave satellite to provide critical weather data for military operations, including ocean surface winds, ice thickness, snow depth, and soil moisture.
The launch featured the third use of the rocket's first-stage booster, which landed back at Vandenberg, demonstrating SpaceX's commitment to reusability.
SpaceX's successful mission is a precursor to the WSF-M2 satellite launch planned for 2028.
SpaceX utilized flight-proven fairings for the mission, emphasizing resource efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Two additional classified payloads are scheduled to be launched by SpaceX later this year as part of the Phase 2 Launch Service Procurement contract.
