The British House of Commons Science and Technology Committee plans to summon Elon Musk to testify regarding his social media platform, X, and its role in spreading disinformation during recent riots in England and Northern Ireland.

The inquiry will focus on the impact of social media in disseminating false content and hate speech, particularly in the wake of violent far-right riots that occurred across various UK cities in the summer of 2024.

Specifically, the committee aims to investigate the use of generative AI in creating provocative images that incited Islamophobic protests following the Southport killings in late July.

Following these riots, misinformation spread rapidly on social media, with false claims identifying the alleged attacker as a Muslim asylum seeker.

Executives from other major platforms, including Meta and TikTok, are also expected to participate in the inquiry, highlighting the broader concerns about online safety and content moderation.

The hearings are set to begin in early 2025, amid growing concerns that UK online safety laws may not keep pace with evolving technology.

Next month, Ofcom is anticipated to release new rules under the Online Safety Act, which will require social media companies to effectively address illegal content and safety risks.

In light of these events, the UK government is considering new regulations for social media, including a potential ban on access for users under 16, following similar measures in Australia.

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has emphasized the importance of online safety, advocating for algorithms designed to protect users, especially children.

Peter Mandelson, a former Labour minister, has suggested that mending ties between Musk and the UK government could be beneficial, given Musk's significant influence in technology.

Musk has previously expressed frustration with the UK government, criticizing issues such as 'two-tier policing' and a perceived crackdown on free speech during the riots.

Chi Onwurah, the committee chair, has expressed a desire to challenge Musk on his views regarding freedom of expression versus the spread of disinformation.
