Dr. Thomas Kwan, a 53-year-old general practitioner from Sunderland, has been sentenced to 31 years and five months in prison for attempting to murder his mother's partner, Patrick O'Hara, using a fake Covid vaccination that contained a harmful pesticide.

Kwan executed his plot by disguising himself as a nurse and using fake NHS letters to lure O'Hara for a home visit in January 2024.

Following the incident, police found extensive incriminating material at Kwan's home, including dangerous chemicals and instructions for making ricin, a chemical weapon.

The motive behind Kwan's crime was financial greed related to a will made by his mother, which favored O'Hara, leading Kwan to believe he needed to eliminate him to secure his inheritance.

O'Hara expressed satisfaction with the sentence, feeling that justice had been served after enduring such a traumatic experience.

O'Hara, 72, survived the poisoning but spent weeks in intensive care and required multiple surgeries to remove infected tissue due to the necrotizing fasciitis.

Despite surviving, O'Hara now suffers from extreme PTSD and has ended his relationship with Kwan's mother, Jenny Leung.

O'Hara expressed ongoing pain and anxiety from the attack, stating that it has forever changed his life and health.

Kwan's actions led to significant emotional and physical trauma for O'Hara, ultimately resulting in the end of his relationship with Kwan's mother.

His disguise was so convincing that neither O'Hara nor his mother recognized him as he performed medical assessments and reassured O'Hara about the pain he experienced during the poisoning.

The poison used in the fake jab was identified as iodomethane, a pesticide ingredient that caused severe injuries to O'Hara's arm and led to the development of necrotizing fasciitis, a life-threatening flesh-eating disease.

Kwan's defense acknowledged his prior good character but depicted his actions as life-ruining, describing his nurse disguise as 'amateurish' and 'clumsy.'
