Public perception of what it means to be 'truly British' is evolving, with belief in the necessity of British ancestry falling from 51% to 39%.

Additionally, the importance placed on being born in the UK has decreased from 74% in 2013 to 55% in 2023.

This decline in pride is attributed to several national events, including Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and various political scandals.

Generational shifts reveal that younger individuals are less likely to view birthplace as a critical component of national identity.

The report suggests that nationalist sentiment is waning, with younger generations increasingly embracing more inclusive definitions of British identity.

Civic nationalism, which emphasizes contemporary achievements and inclusivity, is rising, contrasting with ethnic nationalism that ties identity to ancestry.

The survey, which involved approximately 5,600 interviews across England, Scotland, and Wales, highlights the UK's multinational identity.

Economic challenges, including inflation and the cost of living crisis, have further exacerbated feelings of national disappointment among the populace.
