Hayley Jones, a 33-year-old prison workshop instructor, has been charged with wilful misconduct in a public office for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with convicted murderer Jordan McSweeney at HMP Belmarsh.

McSweeney, who is serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of Zara Aleena, was previously recalled to prison just two days before the attack due to missed probation appointments.

The alleged relationship between Jones and McSweeney reportedly lasted for a month, occurring between early March and early April 2023, during which time Jones was suspended from her position.

Jones has been granted conditional bail but is prohibited from contacting McSweeney or visiting any prison where he is held.

Both Jones and McSweeney are scheduled to appear in court, with Jones facing serious allegations that could lead to a life sentence if convicted.

The case has been adjourned until September 25 at Woolwich Crown Court, where the seriousness of the charges will be addressed.

Zara Aleena's family, represented by her aunt Farah Naz, has expressed disappointment regarding the alleged relationship and is calling for an investigation into systemic failures within the prison system.

McSweeney was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Aleena, who was brutally attacked and killed in June 2022, suffering 46 injuries during the assault.

Naz emphasized the need for improved management practices and screening processes for prison staff to prevent future breaches of trust.

Jones appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court, while McSweeney attended via video link, highlighting the ongoing legal complexities surrounding both cases.

McSweeney's disheveled appearance during his video court appearance contrasted sharply with the gravity of his past crimes and the current allegations against Jones.
