Virgin Media O2 and Starlink Launch Satellite Solution for UK's Rural Mobile Coverage
April 16, 2024Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Starlink to enhance mobile network coverage in remote areas of the Scottish Highlands.
The project is a component of the Shared Rural Network programme aimed at eliminating connectivity 'not-spots' in rural communities.
In addition to using satellites, VMO2 employs helicopters for deploying mobile signals in extremely isolated locations, including the Scottish island of Skye.
Telefónica Global Services, a shareholder in VMO2 and an official Starlink reseller, collaborates on the initiative.
VMO2's upgrade plan is set to leverage low earth orbit satellite technology to bring mobile connections to areas where traditional infrastructure is impractical.
BT is conducting trials with Starlink technology to potentially extend rural coverage further.
The overarching goal is to close the UK's digital divide by providing reliable mobile coverage to rural communities, with potential applications for emergency services and special events.
