This summer, the Broadway play 'The Shark Is Broken,' which explores the behind-the-scenes moments of the iconic film 'Jaws,' will premiere on Martha's Vineyard to commemorate the film's 50th anniversary.

Written by Ian Shaw, the play depicts the dynamics among the film's lead actors during the 1974 filming and will debut at the Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center on July 5, 2025.

The production aligns with the 50th anniversary of 'Jaws,' which originally premiered on June 20, 1975.

Producer Bill Hanney, who has a personal connection to the film, is bringing the play to Martha's Vineyard after its successful Broadway run, emphasizing his long-standing desire to make it accessible to the community.

The play is inspired by Ian Shaw's access to his father's 'drinking diary' from the filming of 'Jaws,' adding a personal touch to the narrative.

Although Ian Shaw will not perform in the Vineyard production due to a UK tour, he may attend the anniversary events.

Before its Martha's Vineyard run, the play will first be staged at North Shore Music Theatre from May 2 to May 11, with the cast arriving in late June.

The show will participate in Edgartown's Independence Day parade on July 4, 2025, and a ticketing website is in development, with prices expected to range from $45 to $65.

The production will feature original music by Tony Award-winner Adam Cork, designed to evoke the atmosphere of 'Jaws' without using its famous score.

The Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center, which seats 750, will host the play, featuring a replica of the Orca fishing boat as a centerpiece.

The narrative highlights the frustrations of the cast, including characters played by Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss, with the film's malfunctioning shark prop.

The play is noted for its humor, capturing the actors' discussions about their careers and personal lives while navigating the challenges of filming.
