To ensure authenticity and avoid a Vegas-style impersonation, Wheeldon collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lyn Nottage, aiming to balance Jackson's influence with his own artistic style.

Wheeldon credits the Talauega brothers, who danced with Jackson, for their expertise in capturing the authenticity of his dance style, highlighting their crucial input in the production.

Despite his classical ballet background, Wheeldon faced challenges in adapting to Jackson's distinctive dance style as he transitioned to directing and choreographing 'MJ The Musical'.

In February 2022, Wheeldon premiered 'MJ The Musical' on Broadway, which has since grossed $368 million and won four Tony Awards, including best choreography.

The second act of the musical features 'Billie Jean', showcasing Jackson's dance heroes and helping Wheeldon find common ground with Jackson's movement.
