Massachusetts Launches Live Theater Tax Credit to Boost Arts and Economic Growth
November 21, 2024On November 20, 2024, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed a comprehensive economic development bill that introduces a Live Theater Tax Credit.
Governor Healey and Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll emphasized that this credit will not only boost the arts and culture sector but also enhance the state's economic competitiveness.
The introduction of the Live Theater Tax Credit is expected to enhance tourism and stimulate economic activity in Massachusetts, as theater-goers will contribute to local businesses through spending on meals, lodging, and other services.
Massachusetts has a rich history in live theater; however, the number of productions has declined recently due to similar tax credits offered in neighboring states like Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York.
Rhode Island reports an impressive $8 return on investment for every $1 in tax incentives, while New York claims a $10 return for upstate productions, which has generated over $103 million in revenue since 2015 from 19 National Tours.
This new program allows producers of Pre-Broadway, Pre-Off-Broadway, or National Tours in Massachusetts to offset costs incurred within the state.
Any theater in Massachusetts that meets specific size and infrastructure requirements can host these productions, benefiting over 70 theaters statewide.
