Meta is developing a new line of smart glasses called Hypernova, which aims to be an upgraded version of the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses.

These advanced glasses will feature a monocular display in the lower-right quadrant of the right lens, allowing for an immersive augmented reality experience.

Hypernova will utilize Meta AI and integrated headphones, enabling verbal interactions with the device, although this feature is currently limited in the EU.

Powered by Qualcomm silicon, the glasses will run on a customized version of Android and will not include an onboard app store, functioning more as a smartphone accessory.

Users will be able to interact with the glasses through touchpoints on the frame and hand gestures, enhancing the overall user experience.

Hypernova will feature an enhanced camera system for high-quality photo and video capture, along with functionalities like real-time language translation and object recognition.

The anticipated price increase for Hypernova is attributed to the inclusion of the display, which adds to production costs.

Similar to the existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Hypernova will allow users to capture images and videos, access AI via built-in microphones, and pair with smartphones for calls and music.

The smart glasses market has experienced over 200% year-over-year growth, with Meta holding more than 60% market share in 2024.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reported strong demand for the current Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which sold over a million pairs in less than two years.

EssilorLuxottica, the manufacturer of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, reported sales of two million pairs since their launch in late 2023.

This initiative is part of Meta's broader strategy to expand into the augmented reality and virtual reality sectors, competing with tech giants like Google and Amazon.
