Figure Unveils Advanced Figure 02 Robot, Secures $1.5B Funding for Expansion
September 13, 2024Figure has unveiled its latest humanoid robot, Figure 02, designed for both industrial applications and potential household use, showcasing significant advancements in robotics.
The company has successfully secured $1.5 billion in funding, which will support its expansion plans, including moving to a larger facility next year.
Since May 2023, Figure has rapidly expanded its workforce, now employing 130 engineers to enhance its development efforts.
Currently, Figure 02 is being tested at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing plant, where it is gathering data and refining its practical functions.
The testing of Figure 02 includes various scenarios, particularly in automotive assembly, following successful pilot programs with BMW earlier this year.
During its pilot programs, Figure robots operated nearly continuously at the BMW plant and are set to return in January with an initial fleet of mid-to-high single digits.
Figure 02 features 16 joints for enhanced movement capabilities, along with safety measures like soft stops to prevent pinch points.
Equipped with six color cameras and a visual language model, Figure 02 can effectively detect and navigate its surroundings.
This latest model emphasizes modularity, allowing for user-replaceable legs and batteries, making it the company's most robust humanoid design to date.
Integration with OpenAI enhances Figure 02's capabilities, enabling advanced natural language processing for direct interaction with humans.
The design of Figure 02 has seen improvements, with components more integrated and hidden within the torso, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.
Looking ahead, Figure is exploring consumer applications for its robots, aiming to achieve a price point below $20,000 while currently testing Figure 02 for home tasks.
