Milan prosecutors are launching an investigation into suspected Russian drone flights over the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy.

Established in 1960, the JRC is located on Lake Maggiore and is designated as a restricted area where drone flights are prohibited.

The investigation underscores ongoing security concerns regarding espionage activities targeting European research facilities.

The drone reportedly flew over the facility five times in February, raising significant security concerns.

Currently, the JRC is conducting research on the safety aspects of drones, which adds to the sensitivity of the situation.

A formal investigation into unknown individuals for possible espionage has been initiated, overseen by the department handling suspected terrorist offenses.

Guido Crosetto, Italy's Defence Minister, highlighted the seriousness of these allegations, suggesting they fit a broader pattern of hybrid warfare involving espionage.

Salvatore De Meo, a Member of the European Parliament, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the potential security threat to technology and national defense.

De Meo called for a unified European response to enhance the security of EU research centers, stressing that this issue impacts the entire European Union.

Concerns have been raised that the drone may have been equipped with high-tech surveillance capabilities for detailed reconnaissance.

In response to the incident, Forza Italia has submitted a formal inquiry to the European Commission seeking clarification on its awareness and preventive measures.

The JRC's strategic importance is heightened by its proximity to key industrial sites, including those belonging to Italy’s leading defense contractor, Leonardo.
