A large-scale search is currently underway for Detective Inspector Jay Notaro, a high-ranking Queensland police officer who went missing following a surfing trip.

His surfboard and keys were discovered at Broken Head in New South Wales around 12:40 PM on March 24, 2025, raising alarms about his safety.

Notaro's car was also found on March 25, 2025, after he failed to report for work, prompting further concern for his welfare.

The search operation resumed on March 26, 2025, at 7 AM, involving NSW Police on land and water, a Queensland Police helicopter, and surf lifesavers.

Initial search efforts on March 24 included Tweed/Byron Police, Police Rescue, Marine Area Command, QLD PolAir, and Surf Life Saving NSW, and continued into March 25.

Search crews are focusing their efforts between Lennox Head and Cape Byron, particularly in the Broken Head area, as they look for Notaro.

Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy expressed deep concern for Notaro's welfare, noting that his disappearance is out of character.

Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers described Notaro as a future leader in the police force and expressed hope for his safe return.

Leavers emphasized Notaro's competence and capability, stating, "He is not only a friend, he is one of the future leaders of the organization," and expressed his prayers for Notaro's safe return.

Notaro joined the Queensland Police in 2003 and has been involved in several homicide investigations since 2015.

In 2024, he received the compassion in policing award from the Queensland Homicide Victims’ Support Group for his dedication to victims' families.

In addition to his police work, Notaro has contributed significantly to the local water police command and is known for his passion for surfing.
