SEC Clears Immutable in Crypto Probe, Boosts Confidence in Blockchain Gaming Sector
March 25, 2025
On March 25, 2025, Immutable announced that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has closed its investigation into the company, finding no wrongdoing.
The resolution of the SEC inquiry is expected to foster greater regulatory clarity, unlocking additional investments in Web3 gaming, which has already garnered over $12 billion in venture capital since 2020.
Immutable has onboarded over 500 blockchain games since its founding in 2018 and has raised $300 million from notable investors like Temasek and Tencent.
Robbie Ferguson, co-founder and president of Immutable, expressed satisfaction with the SEC's decision, viewing it as a positive development for the crypto industry and gaming sector.
The closure of the SEC inquiry resolves the Wells notice issued to Immutable in November 2024, which indicated potential enforcement action regarding securities law violations.
This decision aligns with a shift in the SEC's approach to crypto regulation under Acting Chair Mark Uyeda, as several other investigations against major crypto firms have also been closed since early 2025.
Following the announcement, Immutable's IMX token saw a 7.5% increase in value, trading at $0.6, with trading volume surging by 122.0%, reflecting increased trader confidence in the company's future.
The SEC has established a new Crypto Task Force led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, aimed at fostering clearer guidelines and engaging with industry stakeholders for collaborative rulemaking.
Despite the SEC's closure of its inquiry, the Rosen Law Firm is pursuing a securities class-action lawsuit against Immutable related to its IMX token offering, which the company is not concerned about.
With the inquiry concluded and no charges filed, Immutable views this outcome as a victory for regulatory clarity in the blockchain gaming sector and plans to accelerate its expansion.
Despite facing regulatory scrutiny, Immutable achieved significant milestones, including launching the Immutable zkEVM blockchain and securing partnerships with three multi-billion-dollar companies.
Ferguson emphasized that overcoming the investigation was crucial for attracting the global gaming audience of 3.5 billion, highlighting the importance of digital ownership in Web3.
