National Grid's 114-Mile Pylon Plan Sparks Debate: Consultation Begins on Major Electricity Overhaul
March 18, 2025
If the project receives approval, construction of the power line is anticipated to begin in 2027, with operations expected to commence by 2031.
Households located within 500 meters of the new or upgraded pylons will benefit from discounts of up to £2,500 over a decade, translating to approximately £250 annually.
Despite the potential benefits, the project has encountered considerable opposition, particularly from the Essex Suffolk Norfolk Pylons action group, which is advocating for alternatives such as underground cabling.
A consultation has been launched regarding the installation of 114 miles of pylons stretching from Tilbury, Essex, to Norwich, Norfolk, aimed at enhancing electricity transmission from offshore wind farms.
This statutory consultation is taking place in Thurrock and will continue until mid-April 2025, with National Grid planning to submit an application to the Planning Inspectorate later this year.
In response to local feedback, National Grid has proposed relocating the connection point from the existing Tilbury substation to a new Tilbury North Substation, situated three miles north near Orsett.
This initiative is part of The Great Grid Upgrade, which National Grid describes as the most significant overhaul of the electricity grid in generations.
Changes proposed during the consultation include the relocation of the connection point, which aims to minimize the need for extending the existing substation and some underground cabling.
