Despite his long-standing relationship with SNL, Questlove has never been a musical guest, although he plans to release an album with the Roots later this year.

Questlove, the documentary's director, aimed to provide a fresh perspective by emphasizing storytelling rather than simply listing the best performances.

He credits much of his musical education to SNL, having grown up watching the show with limited access to other programming.
