Apple's iPhone Exports from India Soar 42% to $12.8B, Boosted by Local Production and PLI Scheme
January 13, 2025In 2024, Apple achieved record iPhone exports from India, totaling $12.8 billion, which represents a remarkable 42% increase from the previous year.
This growth in exports is largely attributed to enhanced local value addition, which now ranges from 15-20% per model, alongside a 46% rise in domestic production to $17.5 billion.
Since the inception of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in 2021, Apple's local value addition has significantly increased from just 5-8% to 20% for some models.
While final assembly has scaled up quickly under the PLI scheme, local production of critical components like PCBs and camera modules has lagged, though these are expected to be included in future incentive schemes.
Apple is focusing on local value addition by onboarding Indian and non-Chinese suppliers, and has begun producing components and sub-assemblies locally.
Preliminary data indicates that Foxconn accounted for 54% of the $12.8 billion in exports, with Tata Electronics contributing 29% and Pegatron 17%.
Since the PLI scheme started, Apple has become India’s largest and fastest-growing private-sector employer, generating around 185,000 direct jobs, with over 70% of these positions held by women.
A government official described Apple’s export achievement as 'unprecedented for a single product in a year', underscoring the effectiveness of the PLI scheme.
In addition to its export success, Apple is expanding its retail presence in India, which has now become its fifth-largest market globally.
Local iPhone sales are projected to grow by 20% in 2025, potentially reaching up to 15 million units as Apple aims to counter declining market share in China.
Foxconn’s plant in Tamil Nadu is noted as India’s largest factory by employment, with over 30,000 women among its 42,000 workers at peak operations.
In 2023, Apple exported $9 billion worth of iPhones, which constituted three-fourths of its domestic manufacturing output of $12 billion.
