Man on Trial for Allegedly Aiding in Brutal Murder of Kelly Wilkinson
September 10, 2024Bell is accused of being complicit in the murder by knowing about Johnston's intentions and helping him obtain the means to carry it out.
The murder occurred after Johnston had previously been charged with raping Wilkinson and had a protection order against him.
Crown prosecutor David Nardone stated that Bell admitted to police in July 2021 to helping Johnston prepare for the attack.
Bradley Bell, aged 29, is on trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court for his alleged involvement in the murder of Kelly Wilkinson, who was killed on April 20, 2021.
The prosecution claims that Bell aided Wilkinson's estranged husband, Brian Earl Johnston, in planning and executing her murder, which involved tying her up and setting her on fire.
Security footage captured Bell and Johnston discussing the murder at their workplace, where Johnston had tools and sedatives.
Bell allegedly accepted $1,000 from Johnston to assist him in the murder, which included filling a jerry can with petrol en route to Wilkinson's home.
The court has seen footage of Bell filling a jerry can with petrol for Johnston shortly before Wilkinson's death.
During the trial, Bell's defense attorney, Edwin Whitton, emphasized that Bell did not kill anyone and urged the jury to focus on the evidence of his knowledge of Johnston's plans.
During cross-examination, Bell acknowledged lying to police but maintained he was not a 'liar'.
Bell claims he was unaware of Johnston's intentions when he assisted him and expressed concern about being seen on CCTV later.
The defense argues that the prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bell knew what Johnston was planning.
