FTC Cracks Down on AI Scams: DoNotPay, Ecommerce Empire Builders, and More Face Charges
September 25, 2024The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is taking action against several companies, including DoNotPay, accused of misleading consumers with AI-powered services.
DoNotPay, known as the 'world’s first robot lawyer', has been cited for failing to deliver valid legal services as promised, resulting in a settlement of $193,000.
The FTC's complaint highlighted that DoNotPay did not test the accuracy of the legal documents generated by its AI and lacked attorney involvement in assessing its functionality.
Alongside DoNotPay, companies like Ascend Ecom and Ecommerce Empire Builders have been accused of defrauding consumers by promising passive income through AI-assisted online storefronts without delivering results.
Ecommerce Empire Builders misled customers into paying up to $2,000 for training programs, falsely claiming they could create an 'AI-powered Ecommerce Empire' with potential for millions in profits.
Ascend Ecom has faced serious allegations, including defrauding consumers of at least $25 million by claiming they could achieve significant monthly incomes through its AI tools.
FBA Machine, previously known as Passive Scaling, is accused of costing consumers over $15.9 million by promoting AI tools that promised guaranteed income from online stores.
The FTC also filed a complaint against Rytr, an AI writing assistant that generated misleading customer reviews, leading to a settlement that prohibits such practices in the future.
The enforcement actions reflect the FTC's commitment to addressing deceptive practices in the AI industry, including false advertising related to AI products.
Chair Khan emphasized that the FTC's actions are aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring fair competition for honest businesses in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
These cases highlight ongoing debates within the FTC regarding regulatory approaches to artificial intelligence, as the agency continues to investigate various companies for misleading claims.
The FTC's recent actions build on prior cases involving deceptive AI claims, signaling a broader crackdown on companies that exploit consumer trust.
