Man Feared Taken by Crocodile During Family Fishing Trip in Far North Queensland
August 5, 2024A 40-year-old man from New South Wales is missing after a suspected crocodile attack while fishing with his family at the Annan River in Far North Queensland.
The incident took place around 2:10 PM on Saturday at the Annan River Bridge in Cooktown, a popular fishing spot located approximately 326 kilometers from Cairns.
Local police indicated that initial investigations suggest the man fell into the water while fishing and did not resurface.
Witnesses reported seeing a large crocodile moments before the man fell in, with a crocodile known as 'Crocodile Bend' believed to be in the area.
Senior Sergeant Greg Finucane confirmed that a large crocodile was sighted in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
Finucane expressed condolences to the man's family, who are reportedly traumatized by the event.
The man was reportedly in Cooktown with his wife and children during the fishing trip, and they were nearby when he disappeared.
Search efforts include the use of drones and watercraft, focusing on a challenging area covering approximately 5 kilometers.
The search and rescue operation involves about five Queensland Police officers and 15 personnel from the State Emergency Service and wildlife officers.
The search is complicated by tidal movements and weather conditions, which affect the waterways.
As of now, the crocodile involved in the attack has not been spotted since the incident.
Officials remind the public that Cooktown is known as 'Croc Country' and encourage practicing 'CrocWise' behavior for safety.
