Patrick Delany, CEO of Foxtel, has issued an apology following the emergence of a photo showing him performing a Nazi salute, a gesture he claims was intended to mimic a sports fan's action.

The controversial image, which dates back approximately ten years, has been described by Delany as 'incompatible' with his values and beliefs.

In his statement, Delany expressed shock at the photo and acknowledged that the gesture was offensive, regardless of his intentions.

He reached out to Foxtel staff in an all-staff email, expressing his sincere apologies to those hurt or offended, particularly within the Jewish community.

David Ossip, President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, accepted Delany's apology but emphasized the hurt caused by the gesture.

The Jewish Council of Australia condemned Delany's actions as 'deeply disturbing,' highlighting that such gestures are inherently offensive and violent towards Jews and other racialized groups.

This incident occurs amid rising antisemitism and Islamophobia in Australia, exacerbated by ongoing tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Notably, Delany had previously signed a letter advocating against antisemitism following the recent conflict in Gaza.

Delany is set to meet with Jewish leaders, including Ossip, to further address the incident and convey his contrition.

News Corp, under CEO Robert Thomson, has taken a strong stance against antisemitism, particularly in light of the October 7 attack in Israel.

Foxtel, once a popular cable network in Australia, is currently struggling against competition from cheaper international streaming services and is reportedly seeking to sell its business.
