WWII Bomb Discovery Triggers Evacuation of 450 Homes in Northern Ireland

The unexploded device was found on August 16, 2024, approximately 9 miles east of Belfast, near a large development site.
Residents within a 400-meter radius of the bomb were instructed to evacuate their homes by 10 AM on August 18, 2024.
Notices were distributed to evacuate homes and businesses within the designated area as part of the police operation.
The police anticipate that the evacuation and clearance operation could take more than five days to complete.
North Down and Ards District Commander Superintendent Johnston McDowell emphasized the importance of public safety and thanked residents for their patience during this operation.
Barricades have been set up by police, and drivers are advised to avoid the area surrounding the evacuation.
A cordon remains in place while police work with partner agencies to ensure public safety and minimize disruption.
An emergency support center has been established at the Ards Blair Mayne Leisure Complex for residents displaced from their homes.
Lost and Found Pets North Down has launched an appeal for temporary foster homes for pets, as residents cannot take them to the emergency center.
Around 450 homes are believed to be affected by the evacuation order.
