Ex-BBC Presenter Huw Edwards Charged with Child Indecency; Faces Court in July
July 30, 2024Former BBC news presenter Huw Edwards, aged 62, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children.
These charges are linked to alleged activities that took place between December 2020 and April 2022.
Edwards was suspended from the BBC in July 2023 after allegations surfaced that he had paid a teenager for sexually explicit photos.
Following his suspension, he resigned in April 2024, citing medical advice after a 40-year career at the BBC.
Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023, and formally charged on June 26, 2024, after the Crown Prosecution Service authorized the charges.
The alleged offenses involve images shared via WhatsApp, with the charge sheet indicating he possessed six category A images, 12 category B images, and 19 category C images.
Before the allegations, Edwards was a prominent figure at the BBC, serving as the lead anchor on nighttime news and covering significant events.
He was one of the BBC's highest-paid presenters, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 in the last financial year.
The Metropolitan Police have reminded the public and media that this is an active case and warned against publishing material that could prejudice future court proceedings.
Edwards is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 31, 2024, and if convicted, he could face up to six months in prison and an unlimited fine.
The BBC has chosen not to comment on the ongoing legal matter, which has drawn significant public attention.
