Three Valencia fans have been sentenced to eight months in prison for racially abusing Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior during a match in May 2023, marking the first conviction for racism at a football match in Spain.

The offenders have also been banned from entering any La Liga or RFEF stadium for two years and must cover legal costs.

Vinícius Júnior praised the historic ruling, emphasizing its significance for all Black individuals facing racism.

The incident at Mestalla stadium involved fans making monkey gestures and sounds towards Vinícius, causing a temporary halt in the match.

Vinícius, currently in the US for Copa América and a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or, has faced previous racist behavior, including incidents involving Atlético Madrid ultras.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended the Spanish authorities for taking a firm stance against racism, calling it a positive step.

Real Madrid, La Liga, and RFEF brought the case to court, with Vinícius Júnior identifying the offenders, reflecting ongoing efforts to eradicate racism in Spanish football.
