BHP and Rio Tinto have partnered with Caterpillar and Komatsu to trial large battery-operated electric haul trucks in the Pilbara region.

The goal is to achieve net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The trials will assess the performance, productivity, and battery design of Cat and Komatsu trucks in Pilbara conditions.

This collaboration marks the initial phase of testing for battery-electric haul trucks, aimed at decarbonizing operations and reducing diesel usage.

BHP has also signed an agreement with Toyota Australia to electrify its fleet of vehicles at mine sites.

This partnership is a crucial step in driving technological advancements and may attract manufacturers to establish a factory in Australia.
