AstraZeneca has conceded in court that its Covid-19 vaccine Covishield can cause a rare condition called Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS).

This admission by AstraZeneca opens the possibility for significant legal claims, with some cases estimated at $38 million each.

The UK government, due to an earlier agreement, will bear the financial burden of any legal payouts related to the vaccine's side effects.

Despite the risk of TTS, which has occurred in 81 cases out of 50 million doses in the UK, the vaccine is linked to preventing Covid-19 deaths and is estimated to have saved six million lives worldwide.

The UK has decided to halt further orders of the AstraZeneca vaccine in favor of mRNA vaccines.
