A 36-year-old Queensland man has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale drug smuggling operation.

The failed plot involved trying to import 900kg of cocaine into Australia, worth an estimated $617 million.

The suspect allegedly led an organized crime network and has been linked to previous drug importation incidents, including 1,230 pounds of cocaine to a remote town in Western Australia.

Authorities have recovered over 250 kilograms of cocaine from beaches, initially discovered on December 22.

The man, who used encrypted messaging and aliases, is scheduled to appear in a Brisbane court on Thursday, with further details expected at a subsequent press conference.
