Premier League Embraces Semi-Automated Offside Tech for 2024/25
April 12, 2024Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to adopt semi-automated offside technology starting the 2024/25 season.
The new system is designed to reduce the average VAR check time for offside by around 30 seconds.
It will employ limb-tracking cameras and a ball chip to provide quicker, consistent offside decisions and enhanced broadcast graphics.
Offside calls will be made visible to fans through computer-generated 3D imagery.
Referees will be alerted only when a player infringes the offside line and makes contact with the ball, while the technology confirms subjective calls.
The final decision will still rest with the referee, based on the player's impact on play.
The specific technology partner for the Premier League has not been announced, with implementation planned after an international break in September, October, or November.
