Tesla Update: Apple Watch Key, Santa Mode, and Dynamic Navigation Transform Driving Experience
December 2, 2024Tesla has rolled out a significant software update that introduces a new app for Apple Watch, enabling users to utilize their watch as a phone key, monitor battery charge, open the frunk, and control climate settings.
Among the fun features in the update is a festive Santa Mode for the Cybertruck, which transforms the vehicle's avatar into a sleigh adorned with holiday-themed graphics.
As part of the update, SiriusXM has become the latest music app supported by Tesla, allowing Premium Connectivity and SiriusXM subscribers to stream music directly in the car without needing Bluetooth.
Despite a revenue decline, SiriusXM reported the addition of 14,000 self-pay net subscribers and has introduced a new in-car pricing model starting at $9.99 for access to all music channels.
While Apple Watch users are thrilled with the new features, Wear OS smartwatch owners are left disappointed due to the lack of an Android equivalent.
Additional safety features in the update include automatic volume reduction when reversing, cross-traffic alerts, and the ability to save Dashcam and Sentry Mode clips directly to a phone.
A new feature will allow Tesla drivers to share accident footage with insurance companies or law enforcement, enhancing the vehicle's utility in such situations.
In addition to the software updates, Tesla is offering a promotional deal that includes a $2,600 discount on new cars and 0% APR financing for those purchasing Full Self-Driving capabilities.
The navigation system has been enhanced to filter search results, displaying options along the route along with estimated detour times.
The integration of SiriusXM's services in newer Tesla models suggests a potential shift away from traditional satellite receivers, following the company's earlier removal of AM radio.
Tesla has expanded live traffic features to all users, previously exclusive to Premium Connectivity subscribers, enhancing navigation capabilities and providing notifications for out-of-service Supercharger stalls.
Owners of older Model Y and Model S/X vehicles without Apple devices may feel excluded, as they will only gain access to limited features unless their vehicles are equipped with matrix headlights.
