Nationwide Recall: 75 Tons of Ground Beef Pulled Over E. Coli Concerns
November 21, 2024A nationwide recall of over 75 tons of ground beef has been issued due to potential E. coli contamination, following reports of illness after consumption on November 13, 2024.
Consumers can find a complete list of the recalled products and their labels on the FSIS website.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture alerted the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) about several individuals who fell ill, prompting the investigation that linked the illnesses to products from Wolverine Packing Co.
The recalled ground beef was distributed exclusively to restaurants across the country and was not available in grocery stores.
Restaurants are advised to discard or return the recalled products and check their refrigerators and freezers for any affected items.
So far, four individuals have been hospitalized, including two who developed serious complications that can lead to kidney failure.
Vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, require immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms of E. coli infection.
E. coli bacteria can cause severe gastrointestinal illnesses, with symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and dehydration, particularly affecting those in vulnerable groups.
While most individuals recover within a week, some may experience severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure.
In response to the recall, Wolverine Packing Co. is conducting an internal audit to enhance quality control measures and ensure food safety.
The company has notified all customers about the recall and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The USDA recommends that anyone experiencing symptoms or concerns about illness should consult a healthcare provider.
