UK Unveils £500m Police Reform to Restore Public Trust and Tackle Crime
November 19, 2024Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to announce significant reforms and over £500 million in additional funding aimed at restoring public confidence in police forces.
These reforms are crucial as public trust in policing has been significantly eroded in recent years.
Cooper warned that without substantial reforms, the principle of policing by consent in Britain could be jeopardized.
The additional funding will support Sir Keir Starmer’s Safer Streets Mission, which focuses on reducing neighbourhood crime and antisocial behaviour.
Andy Cooke, Chief Inspector of Constabulary, emphasized the need for police forces to adapt to modern challenges, noting that operational structures have remained unchanged for over 50 years.
Cooke also expressed concerns over high workloads and low morale among officers, highlighting the necessity for improved funding and data-driven approaches.
Gavin Stephens, Chair of the NPCC, supported the reforms, stressing the importance of keeping communities at the center of policing efforts.
The Home Office will collaborate with police inspectors and the College of Policing to ensure effective intervention in underperforming forces.
A new Police Performance Framework will be established to uphold national standards across all police forces in the UK.
Additionally, a National Centre of Policing will be created to centralize support services and enhance coordination among forces.
A central database will be implemented to track local performance on key issues such as knife crime and violence against women, aiming to halve such incidents within a decade.
Details of the funding breakdown will be provided in December, with a comprehensive reform outline expected in a White Paper to be released in spring 2025.
