24M Technologies, a battery developer backed by Volkswagen, has unveiled its innovative Impervio separator technology, which significantly mitigates the risk of fires in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The president and CEO of 24M highlighted the critical role of safety innovations like Impervio in promoting sustainable energy and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Volkswagen Group invested in 24M in December 2021 as part of three partnerships aimed at advancing EV battery cell development.

Based in the U.S. and spun out of MIT, 24M Technologies employs 'SemiSolid' lithium-ion technology, which not only reduces production area but also lowers CO2 emissions during manufacturing.

In March 2024, 24M announced its 'Liforever' recycling approach, designed for the efficient recovery of active battery materials without generating black mass.

This separator technology was first introduced in January 2024 to specifically tackle fire hazards associated with overcharged EV battery cells and energy storage systems.

Test results revealed that while conventional battery cells overheated and exploded after 38 minutes of overcharging, those equipped with the Impervio separator remained safe even after an hour.

The company provided test data that demonstrates the Impervio separator's effectiveness in preventing thermal runaway during instances of battery overcharging.
