Elon Musk Unveils Starlink's Plan to Erase Dead Zones with Global Cell Connectivity
October 30, 2024Musk indicated that the goal is to eventually serve all carriers in each country after initial partnerships.
To achieve this, SpaceX is collaborating with various cellular providers globally, starting with T-Mobile in the U.S., to offer direct mobile phone internet services through Starlink satellites.
Certain Starlink satellites have capabilities that allow them to function like cell towers in space, facilitating emergency SMS communications in disaster areas, such as those affected by Hurricane Milton earlier in October.
Looking ahead, SpaceX plans to enable texting via Starlink satellites later in 2024 and aims to provide light data services in 2025, with voice call services expected in the same year.
SpaceX executive Benjamin Longmier confirmed that Starlink will allow cellphones to connect even when they are in a pocket or facing away from the satellites.
Longmier emphasized that the direct-to-cell (DTC) technology works indoors, including inside Tesla vehicles, and provided personal testing examples.
Elon Musk announced that Starlink will enable cell phone connectivity anywhere, effectively eliminating dead zones.
