Phishing Scams Target Soneium Users, $127M in Crypto Stolen in Q3 2023
October 22, 2024Soneium, an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, launched its testnet in August 2023 to enhance Web3 adoption.
Recently, Scam Sniffer, a blockchain security company, uncovered a phishing website linked to a Google ad for Soneium, which was disguised as a crypto wallet drainer.
The malicious ad appeared when users searched for 'someium,' a common misspelling of Soneium, illustrating the ongoing threat of phishing scams.
Scam Sniffer noted that the creators of the phishing site employed techniques to obscure the malicious link, complicating detection efforts by Google.
Despite the serious implications, Google has not responded to inquiries regarding the existence of the phishing link.
Scam Sniffer warned that users connecting their wallets to the phishing site after clicking the ad risk losing their assets.
The attack involved victims unknowingly signing a fraudulent signature, which allowed attackers to drain their wallets.
Soneium has partnered with Transak and Circle to provide fiat on-ramp services and support for USDC transactions.
Following the phishing attack, the price of DETH tokens plummeted over 38%, while fwDETH tokens saw a staggering drop of more than 90% before partially recovering.
In a related incident, a crypto whale lost approximately $35 million in a phishing attack on the Blast network, which Scam Sniffer also flagged.
Scam Sniffer previously reported that over $46 million was stolen from 10,800 victims of phishing scams in September 2023.
In total, over $127 million worth of cryptocurrencies were reported stolen in the third quarter of 2023, with Ether wallets being the primary target.
