IndiaAI Mission Funds 8 Ethical AI Projects to Combat Bias and Enhance Privacy
October 16, 2024Launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in July 2022, the mission has a budget of Rs 10,372 crore to support AI research and development in India.
The IndiaAI Mission has selected eight Responsible AI projects under its Safe and Trusted AI Pillar initiative to promote ethical AI development in the country.
These projects were chosen from over 2,000 proposals submitted by academic institutions, startups, and research organizations in response to the IndiaAI Mission's expression of interest.
The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology in Pune is collaborating with Mindgraph Technology to create a framework for explainable and privacy-preserving AI for security purposes.
The selected projects involve various institutions, including IIT Jodhpur, IIT Roorkee, NIT Raipur, and DIAT Pune, partnered with several technology firms and institutes.
The initiative aims to tackle critical issues such as AI bias mitigation, privacy enhancement, and the establishment of frameworks for explainable and trustworthy AI.
The IT Ministry emphasized that these projects will focus on developing indigenous tools and frameworks for ethical, transparent, and trustworthy AI technologies.
The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, is developing tools to assess fairness in AI models through an AI Ethical Certification Framework.
Additionally, the IndiaAI Mission launched an AI Innovation Challenge, offering up to INR 1 Cr to teams that develop impactful AI solutions for government use.
This initiative aligns with the government's vision of leveraging AI for inclusive growth and bolstering India’s global leadership in AI.
The National Institute of Technology, Raipur, is tasked with developing responsible AI strategies aimed at bias mitigation in healthcare systems.
IIT Roorkee's project will focus on generating synthetic data to reduce bias in datasets, while IIT Jodhpur will research 'machine unlearning' to allow AI models to forget specific training data.
