Indian researchers have discovered the fossilized remains of Vasuki indicus, a giant snake from 47 million years ago.

Vasuki indicus is estimated to have been 50 feet long and weighed approximately 2,200 pounds, making it the largest known madtsoiid snake.

The non-venomous Vasuki indicus hunted like modern pythons, using constriction to subdue prey in its swampy, coastal habitat.

This finding enhances our understanding of snake evolution and diversity during the Cenozoic era, particularly of the widespread Madtsoiidae family.
